Erst nach dem sich seit 1671 aus dem F\u00fcrstentum Moldau Armenier niederlie\u00dfen, wurde Elisabethstadt zum bedeutenden regionalen Handelszentrum und zur k\u00f6niglichen Freistadt. Wein- und Wollhandel brachten Wohlstand in die Stadt. Als Kaufleute erhielten die Armenier zahlreiche Privilegien, wurden aber bald von der ungarisch sprachlichen Bev\u00f6lkerung assimiliert. Z\u00e4hlten sich anl\u00e4sslich der Volksz\u00e4hlung von 1930 noch 689 Einwohner zu den Armeniern, sind diese in der letzten statistischen Erhebung nicht mehr festgehalten. 2011 lebten in der Stadt 7.388 Einwohner, davon bezeichneten sich 69 als Deutsche.<\/p>\n<h4>Armenische Kathedrale Hl. Elisabeth<\/h4>\n<p>Die armenische Gemeinde baute in den Jahren 1766-1783 die armenisch-katholische Kirche und das Kloster im barocken Stil. Sie pr\u00e4gt heute noch den Marktplatz.<\/p>\n<h4>Blick zum Chor<\/h4>\n<p>Die Innenausstattung der Kirche datiert aus dem letzten Viertel des 18. Jahrhunderts. Den Hauptaltar und die Statuen des Hl. Kreuz Altars schuf der siebenb\u00fcrgische K\u00fcnstler Simon Hoffmayer 1787. Josef Cs\u0171ros und M\u00e1ty\u00e1s Veress f\u00fchrten die Wandgem\u00e4lde aus. Am 28. Juni 1791 weihte Bischof Ignatius Batthy\u00e1ny den Sakralbau. 1927 wurde der Turmhelm des n\u00f6rdlichen Fassadenturms von einem Unwetter zerst\u00f6rt und nicht mehr aufgebaut.<\/p>\n<h4>Evangelische Kirche<\/h4>\n<p>Ein erster Kirchenbau mit dem Patrozinium Hl. Georg bestand bereits im 15. Jahrhundert. Die Fundamente dieses gotischen Sakralbaues wurden 1988 freigelegt. Demnach handelte es sich um eine Saalkirche mit eingezogenem Chor, ohne Glockenturm. Die heutige evangelische Kirche, eine Saalkirche mit Glockenturm, entstand 1771 als r\u00f6misch-katholische Privatkapelle von Theodor T\u00f6r\u00f6k. Die evangelische Kirchengemeinde erwarb diese 1925 und baute sie um.<\/p>\n<h4>Wohnhaus<\/h4>\n<p>Nach Wiener Vorbildern bauten die wohlhabenden B\u00fcrger ihre Wohnh\u00e4user. Ein Spitzgiebelrisalit dominiert die Fassade, \u00fcber dem Fenster ist das Wappenschild der Familie angebracht.<\/p>\n<p><small><br \/>\n<em>Text: M. Rill, Fotos: G. Gerster, M. Rill, A.
